Uganda is among the lucky 51 states set to play host in the fourth global World Cup Trophy Tour. The prestigious trophy tournament is by Coca-Cola who is Fifa partners.
During a press conference, an announcement by Coca-Cola Africa Beverages revealed that Kampala Uganda would host the trophy from March 5th to 6th. The Senior Brand Manager of Coca-Cola, Miriam Limo cited that Uganda had met the criteria for hosting since it is a Coca-Cola member country. Uganda had successfully beaten 10 other African countries in the quest to host the iconic tournament with a 6.142 kg gold piece trophy. The tournament will be held across 12 cities. Miriam Limo said that the occasion would be momentous.
For Uganda, this will be the second chance of hosting the trophy for the first time having been under President Museveni back in 2009. The trophy will be handed to President Museveni yet again on March 5th before the public is given a chance to take photographs on March 6th. This will take place at Lugogo Cricket Oval whereby a Coca-Cola bottle will be the entry pass. Coca-Cola Africa Beverages Public Affairs and Communication Director Simon Kaheru said that he looked forward to seeing photos of the trophy shot under Ugandan sunshine. He expressed profound happiness in the chance to host the Cup saying it would boost Uganda’s chances of hosting more in future. Mr. Kaheru was also keen to note that the trophy would be accorded high-security level as it would be an international guest.
General Secretary for National Council of Sports (NCS) Mr. Nicholas Muragami pointed out that the trophy tour would impact positively in the tourism sector. He also acknowledged Coca-Cola efforts in nurturing talents through COPA Coca-Cola to Cranes. He pointed out some of the beneficiaries like Khalid Aucho and Muhammad Shaban. The government also expects to generate millions of dollars from the event which will create high interest ahead of June.
Miriam Limo revealed that 12 Ugandans would be selected to travel to Cape Town, South Africa to bring the trophy to Kampala city.
